Bunacurry Monastery

Historically this 60 Monastic site has always played a central role on Achill Island for commerce, spirituality, sustenance & education. It is proposed to re-establish its central role for Historical, Leisure, Residential Education and Tourism uses. The character of the site lies in its specificity i.e. its history, buildings, flora, fauna, terrain, views and communal memory. During the famine a soup kitchen was established beside the monastery. Flora includes escalonia, rhodedendron, apple trees, gorse and scots pine. The proposal is to preserve and build upon all these physical and cultural elements which are found on the site.
